A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

We’re back from Las Vegas. Not too much poorer! I did play my first table, losing $20 at a roulette table. That’s a game that’s my speed. Not too complicated and fun. I watched a video on how to play craps. Way too many rules! ;-)
Ian and I went with his aunts Midge and Anna, his sister Kara (it was her 21st birthday which was the reason for the trip) and his mom and dad. And we did SO much walking! Went to see many of the casinos and what each had to offer. The Bellagio has a beautiful conservatory of flowers, an incredible glass chandelier that resembles a field of exotic blooms. Downtown is the “Fremont Experience”, an entire street of casinos with a giant light display overhead (about 1 block long, wide as a street) that shows various videos made for it. The one we saw was an “alien abduction” video. It was cute, a little cheesy. It’s impressive to see something on such a large screen. Here’s a shot of a couple of the casinos down there:

We bought second row tickets to see Cirque du Soleil’s show Zumanity. It was fantastic! If you’ve seen them before (a mix of circus, trapeze, music, costume, dance, and more), it was a mix of the normal with a dash of cabaret. The scene between the two gay lovers (who are actually a couple) was not what I expected. I interpreted it as a struggle between the two, of power and desire, lust and betrayal.

Overall, an interesting city to see and check out the sites. If you’re not into gambling though, the excitement fades after a while. It’s definitely one of those things you need to do at least once.

Welcome back. Your comment about gambling and the city is dead on. I don’t gamble so I find the hotels and the Strip get boring REAL fast. When we visit the city (my folks live there) we’re far more interested in the restaurants and bookstores.

Yep. Seeing each casino’s gimmick and decor is interesting, but they all do the fake “i’m on a neighborhood street” look now with painted sky ceilings and two story building facades. Looks cool, but it gets old.

There is some good food in Vegas, but you have to pay big $$ for it. The cheap food is mostly bleah. I didn’t hit any bookstores though!

    Re: bookstores.
Hit them when you have a chance. The biggie is Albion.

Cool, thanks! I love to peruse bookstores. Something wonderful about getting tucked back in the corner of a huge bookstore, between two towering shelves of old, used sci-fi paperbacks, and plunking down in a little niche and skimming through a few books. Half-Price Books is our big one around here. Of course, you can go to Barnes & Noble if you want the polished, super-organized look (and the Starbucks).
