A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

They’re here! My work is finally leaping ahead from the 60’s to the 21st century with new VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones from Nortel (see Brian, we’re trying to keep Nortel in business!)

I’m not joking, before this we had the old Ma Bell clunkers that you (ok, if you’re over 25) probably had when you were little. Big clunky handset, large grey dial pad, and nothing else. No voicemail indicator (you had to pick it up to tell if you had a message, NO ONE here ever checks their voice mail!), no speaker phone, no caller ID.

Mine is plugged in and has tone, but I think it’s a separate number/network until they switch over in a couple of weeks and take out the old ones.

Yep, they are the new phone we have here at work. Since a switch/PBX is basically just a computer, routing IP over the other packets was no big deal. We like them here because they are connected to our internal voicemail called CallPilot (basically Meridian Mail on steroids)… nice system. Way better than the Cisco competitor like the Dallas Public Library uses. LOL

I can’t wait to use all the features (we have a ‘training’ class next week!). I’m sure we’ll all start annoying each other with speaker phone before too long though.

What Dunc used to do when he worked at Cisco (CA) was log into his fone to enable diversions, etc. It was VERY kewl to see that in action. He just forwarded the fone to our house, and calls were made without anyone knowing the difference :-) Very FAB Virgil!

Now that’s cool. I definitely need to read up on all the functions of the phone!
