Great article over on NY Times (free registration required) about the secret justice system developed by conservatives after 9/11. It’s long (haven’t even finished it yet myself), but uncovers a very horrific act of this administration. Lines like this sent a chill down my back:
To the policy’s architects, the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon represented a stinging challenge to American power and an imperative to consider measures that might have been unimaginable in less threatening times
We should always take the fair, democratic, moral high road as a nation, and a leader of the world. Regardless of the current situation, regardless of the intensity or brutality of an attack, we must adhere to certain moral standards and laws when handling prisoners. If we sink to the level of thugs and cruel overlords that mete out furious wrath and punishment but no fair justice, then we are no better than those we punish.
It’s a shame something so terrible is just a sideline item one day in the news. This type of behaviour is equivalent to the horrible internment camps we had for the Japanese in WWII.
