A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

But I can’t think of one. Hey, just be glad I’m making an entry! ;-)
Had a lot of fun Sunday night at Chris & James house. We sipped Champagne (courtesy of Brian M.) and made sugar cookies along with Brian S., Damir and his friend Michael. Then, we proceeded to make a royal mess decorating them!! Chris’ santa turned out the best, but there were several that looked great (as well as Ian’s, uh, ’special’ artistic ones!!). Then, this morning, I woke up to find the cats had dug into the cookies we brought home!! Luckily a number of them were untouched.

Then, when I’m backing out of the garage, I dinged up my car. We bought cheap bicycles a while back to see if we’d ride them (we don’t) and they’ve sat in the garage for a year or more gathering dirt and dust. Well, mine was next to my car, and the handlebars clear my side view mirror by an inch or so when I pull in. I’ve even bumped them a couple of times. Eventually, it was bound to happen. Backing out, the side view mirror caught the handlebar, yanked the bike around, my car went over it, and the bike and broom got shoved against my car. The bike was a mess so I just tossed it, and the car has a small dent and scratch.

What I was glad about, was that I really didn’t care. In the past I would have freaked out, shouted, kicked stuff. I just shrugged. It’s a dent. Big whoopie. I cleaned everything up, threw away stuff that was broken, and made sure the garage door worked (the bike got yanked between the corner of the garage and my car and bent the garage door track and sensor). Then, I got in my car and headed to work. When I got out at work, I didn’t even go around to see the damage again like I would have in the past (you keep looking at it, thinking it will magically heal itself). I can probably do paintless dent repair where they ‘pop’ the dent out, then get the touch up paint and have it practically like new, but I’m in no rush to do it.

I admit, I probably have a long ways to go. If it had really scraped up my car bad or broken the garage door, I bet I would have been pissed off. I would have let it run through my head “you’re so stupid for letting this happen! you’re so dumb to put the bike there! you never pay attention!” etc. Which is all true to a certain extent, but beside the point. It happened. Material possessions break, get dirty, etc. It’s nice to have them while we do, but they shouldn’t be anything to stress over. The car works, the garage door works. Hopefully I’ve learned from my mistake and will move on. Don’t put anything in a spot where it’s likely it could cause a problem like that. Be more aware.

And so it was that a cheap $50 bike from Target helped me learn my daily Zen. ;-)
