A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

Everyone, Darnell Smith from the Canton area, who was a contact involved with getting the movie Fat Girls to come there, has commented on the original post and provided more information. Please read his comments on the post below. He has brought up some good points that there are always two sides, in this case there are people in Canton who wanted the movie and were excited about it, and of course those who threw a fuss and didn’t.

Mr. Smith has made a good point that boycotting First Monday only hurts those vendors and not the city planners who made the decision. I responded in the comments as best I know how. Please comment with your thoughts on how best to respond to a situation like this. Boycotting can send a strong message, but it can also target the wrong people. I also encourage you to e-mail, mail, or call the people in charge (see James’ post for more details) and voice your concerns.

I just wanted to thank Mr. Smith for taking the time to share some information and also to say thank you for helping to get the movie to Canton in the first place. The movie sounds like it could have a good message, and I’m sure it would have been a lot of fun for Canton citizens to help out in it. Hopefully good things come out of this situation and perhaps some of those who were not as open to gays & lesbians in Canton will be more so after this. And for those who were ok with a gay-centric film in Canton, thank you!

I agree with your comments in your last paragraph. I think if Mr. Smith is concerned about this, then he (or the Chamber) needs to let their council know how unacceptable, and how irresponsible this action was.

When I see an apology from the council for their short-sightedness, then I’m all about recommending that we avoid Canton.
