A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

Contact PBS and let them know how upset you are about their recent decision to pull an episode of “Postcards from Buster” called “Sugartime” because the episode contains two lesbian couples and their children. Although PBS claims their decision was independent of Bush’s new Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, criticism of the episode, it is still no excuse.

It’s one thing to say the show, aimed at children, was forcing the topic of gays & lesbians into homes before parents are ready to talk about it with their children. But get this: the entire point of the show “Postcards from Buster” is (lifted directly from the site):

to build awareness and appreciation of the many cultures in America

I’m sorry, correction. That’s “to build awareness and appreciation of the many heterosexual cultures in America”. Guess I should have looked closer.

Yes, parents have the choice to decide when/if/how to talk to their children about racism, diversity, homosexuality, religion, etc. But that doesn’t mean you make it invisible until then.

I hope the Bush administration makes drastic cuts to PBS’ funding during this administration. It’ll serve’em right.

You want drastic cuts to PBS funding? Oh honey, no. We need to increase funding to PBS and give them more freedom so they can continue making shows like this. Maybe one day without constant government intervention.

Yes, that would be the smart thing to do. ;-) I on the other hand prefer to shoot my mouth with the first mean thing I can think of. Makes me feel better at least. I do hope PBS continues to get funded as they’ve got great programming that is a fresh perspective from the other media drones. I was just extremely disappointed in their cowardice on this situation.
