From a straight mom about her young son’s exposure to gay people.
You’re supposed to marry the person you love, Mom
This particular line really jumped out at me. It summarizes how angry and confused I feel lately by the actions of many Americans and our government when social radically ultra-conservative view points are used to back up decisions and pass laws, but it also captures the fact that those very people probably feel the same about social liberals:
I imagine that the people who are busy teaching their kids that God is a man who wants gay people to suffer probably feel the same way as I do, like they’re fighting off barbarians.

Sounds like her kids are well-brought-up. Stories like that give me hope, even while it seems society and kids are becoming more degenerate, that perhaps every generation is an improvement over the last.
March 29, 2005 @ 8:31 pmThat was really a great article. Salon used to be on my daily reading list until they started the “premium” stuff.
Her comment about “I imagine that the people who are busy teaching their kids that God is a man who wants gay people to suffer probably feel the same way as I do, like they’re fighting off barbarians.” is a good and humanistic observation. However, I think it is fair to say that “they (the right) started it.”
March 29, 2005 @ 10:16 pmI think we’ve always got to stay optimistic that each generation is better than the last. New generations will always seem strange, rude, etc. to older generations and do things the older generations don’t approve of. We have to encourage a healthy, vibrant society while still encouraging an open-minded outlook on experimentation and creativity.
And you’re right Chris, they *DID* start it!
