Follow the link below to fax your Texas state representative. I urge anyone I know, friend or family, who lives in Texas to do so (or heck, even if you don’t live here let them know what you think!)
The Texas House of Representatives have banned GLBT parents from being foster parents. The next step is banning us from adoption. More than the fact this is prejudiced and hurts Ian and I personally, it hurts numerous children. The adoption and foster system in the U.S. is WAY overburdened and most of these kids will never grow up in a stable home, much less even have foster parents for a few years. Now, they’ve drawn a line in the pool of available parents and shrunk it.
This line is based on stereotypes, that gays aren’t good parent material. Let me go ahead and put the stereotypes in writing: we’re promiscuous, late night partyers, wild perverse things happening all over the house at all hours, drug use, etc. Just not a suitable environment for children. It’s a stereotype, sure it may apply to some gay people, but it applies to some straight people as well. We’ll have to work to gradually change it.
But you don’t pass laws based on “well, don’t all gays party all night? that’s what I’ve heard”. You pass laws based on good values of tolerance, respect, dignity, trust as well as scientific evidence (which indicates children of LGB families are just as well adjusted as children of straight families).
I’m fine if they want to increase the standards during the application/interview process and have applicants earn negative points or be disqualified if they: take drugs, have frequent different sexual partners coming through the home, etc. But these standards whatever they may be should be applicable to all people. Get to the root of why you don’t want certain types of people to raise children, don’t pick scapegoats.
