A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

This is a great letter from a Catholic gay man to a Delta stewardess who told him his off-color t-shirt would be ‘offensive’ to Christians on the plane.

This is a great excerpt (the stewardess is apparently ‘Andrea’):

Andrea, you struck a raw nerve with me. Over the course of the past 5 years I have witnessed the high jacking of the lessons of Jesus by hateful, smug and unchristian followers such as you. The fact that Christians today believe they have the power to define who is and is not a Christian based upon sexual orientation, political affiliation and in your case, clothing enrages me. I AM A CHRISTIAN. YOU CANNOT EXCLUDE ME BECAUSE OF WHAT I WEAR, OR WHO I FUCK OR HOW I VOTE. I have cried tears of rage in the past two years because people like you fuck with my head and make me second guess myself and my faith. FUCK YOU, ANDREA, my Faith is stronger than you and your ignorance.

I saw that link on Towleroad this morning. I am a bit torn on who to side with. I have to agree with Andrea that his shirt was vulgar, offensive and inappropriate to wear on the plane. I think it would be offensive to more than just Christians. If I were a parent with a young child, I wouldn’t like someone sitting across the aisle from my 7 year old wearing it. I wonder if airlines have a dress code.

In the end, I agree with the result, perhaps not the reasoning.

I have to agree. I liked the wording and point of his blog entry, but I was a bit disappointed when I read his t-shirt’s text. I thought it was a bit more than ‘off-color’! ;-) If it had said something like “Jesus is stupid” he would have had much better standing. The stewardess caused more of an issue to people who hear the story to say “christians won’t like it” then to just say “that’s a tad tasteless on an enclosed public space like a plane”
