I find it highly amusing that the administration is getting upset that right wing conservatives are attacking Bush’s friend, Attorney General Gonzales, as a possible Supreme Court nominee.
It’s almost like they’re in shock that the far right can get overly-worked up about issues. I’m sitting here thinking “come on! None of their hysterics til now registered on you?” They blew the Schiavo case way out of proportion and disappointed even the majority of the public, they make vicious attacks on gays (i.e. Senator Frist comparing us to bestiality and pedophiles with Bush not reacting in shock to his comments).
The administration was ok with just turning away, covering their ears and singing “la la la” like none of it was happening, since it was all working in their favor. But now they’re suddenly forced to open their eyes when the extremism backfires on them.
I’m glad it’s finally happening though. Maybe some good will come of it and the administration will finally get some balls and put a leash on the rabid dog of right wing fundamentalism. Extremism on either side is never pretty and doesn’t accomplish anything. Don’t think I’m saying the left is innocent, it’s just that the right has been getting away with so much of it lately.
Everyone is calling for a civil discourse on the Supreme Court nominee and at least saying that they want a moderate voice to replace O’Connor. Let’s hope we honor this woman’s great work and replace her with someone who is fair, knowledgeable, and doesn’t have an agenda but rather works to faithfully interpret the constitution and respect the rights of all individuals.

I agree, however, I think the Administration is merely saying to their fundamentalist brothers, “Think it, don’t say it.” Maybe I’m a pessimist (or realist), but I truly hope Bush does not pick a controversial person to fill O’Connor’s position. It will only lead to the further division of our nation.
