I read about this the other day. If the U.S. military wants to keep “don’t ask, don’t tell”, that’s fine. But enforce it consistently!
If you’re not aware, under President Clinton a compromise was forged that no one liked on letting gays in the military: if the gay person stays closeted and doesn’t come out while in the military, the military supposedly won’t investigate or ask and the person can stay in. Only if it comes out in the open (the gay person tells another person in the military, is seen kissing a person of the same sex, etc.) can the military discharge them.
In reality, the military has baited many gays and lesbians, frequently looked the other way on gay bashings, and sent MPs to gay bars looking for closeted officers. Many first world countries (Britian is the only one at the moment that comes to mind) have integrated open gays into their military and even recruited them, disproving the conservatives’ belief that gays in the U.S. military would disintegrate unit cohesion (even though thousands of GLBT Americans serve in the military in the closet).
But this latest hypocritical change is very frustrating. If someone says they are gay and are about to be shipped to Iraq, they are still shipped out to risk their life, and told they will be discharged when they return. So, they apparently won’t harm unit cohesion while they’re out there fighting in harm’s way, but once they’re back here they will and can be kicked out. What a bunch of hypocritical ignorant loser assholes.
What was that song from Peaches & Herb back in the ’70s? “Been Indicted”? C’mon, everybody join in, you know the words!
“Tom’s been indicted and it feels so good
September 28, 2005 @ 4:25 pmHe’s been indicted cause they understood
They’re loathe to acquit
And Sugarland’s not exempt
We all are so excited cause he’s been indicted, hey, hey”
Whoops - I’m not sure why but my comment went in the wrong place. Obviously this was meant as a reply to the Tom Delay story.
