I just finished watching Brokeback Mountain at the Angelika with Ian, Chris and James, Layton, Jonas, and Douglas. Wow. This, for me at least, was one of those truly heartbreaking films. I don’t want to give too much away, but it is a cryer. Ang Lee handles the subject matter artfully. The huge, silent terrain of Wyoming matches the beautiful and bleak feeling that runs through the movie. The tale of two cowboys in the 1960s who fall in love, Brokeback is an amazing film. Jake Gyllenhaal turns in a good performance, but it is Heath Ledger’s Ennis that is such a powerful character.
As soon as this is on DVD I have to get a copy. I know there’s that film some people have that when they’re just in the mood, they get a one of those movies that makes you cry but you just have to watch it. This will be mine, I can already tell. While it’s not chock full of smiles and laughs, there is hope mixed in with the despair as you realize that even though the characters don’t get everything you want them to have, they do get to be with the ones they love.
I do want to read the short story upon which the movie is based now. On to Amazon to see if it’s available.
Towleroad and ModFab have links to the article online. No need to buy.
The characters get to be with the ones they love? Um, I would disagree with that. Isn’t that the major problem in their lives - that they cannot live together. Their only option is to see each other every couple of months, sometimes longer.
The movie was good, but I do not think it was the great gay movie that others are making it. I hope all the hype around the movie doesn’t hurt it.

You’re absolutely right, they don’t get to spend their lives with the one they love. I guess what I was trying to say is when I felt so sad at the end, I for some reason felt glad that they at least got to spend all those ‘fishing trips’ together. That they were able to have some time together and they didn’t completely shun their love.
