The story of a writer’s struggle with Alzheimer’s intermixed with scenes from her courtship with her husband many years ago, Iris, who is played by the wonderful Dame Judi Dench, is a simple yet poignant film about love and experiences. I love Dench and she is perfect for the part. In Iris’ more lucid moments she fills the character with her usual regal sagacity, but does equally well in her moments of forgetfulness and separation from the real world. Alzheimer’s has to be one of the most frightening diseases out there. While something which affects your body limits your ability to experience and alter the world, losing your memory and your ability to interact with the world around you … erases part of who you are.
