Well this was going to be a post on a few different topics I’d read about lately that I wanted to comment on. Unfortunately I can only recall one. So here it is!

Java goes open source - Sun finally made the announcement to release the programming language as open source. A lot of people have asked for this for quite a while. Sun has been very open about the development of the language and related specifications with the Java Community Process. I’ve actually supported Sun controlling Java as a steward. I’m curious to see how this will affect the Java community. Will standards be as consistent? Will new versions of specs roll out as quickly with as much progress and coherency on where the language is going? Open source is great but my impression from the OSS community is it’s a bunch of talented people with a lot of ideas and too much free time who can never agree on anything!
