Creating a law which makes English the official language of the U.S. is pointless and divisive. Anyone with the slightest bit of political acumen or awareness can see this as Republican strategery to separate themselves from the President and use it only as political leverage in discussions on the immigration reform bill. It’s immature and offensive to the very soul of what America is all about. English is the de facto language here and it is certainly far easier to get along if you learn it. We’re never going to stop teaching our children English in schools. Such a law makes the U.S. betray the fundamental principles upon which it was founded of equality across all peoples. I would be no more or less offended if the U.S. government proposed making Christianity the official religion of the U.S.
At the very most I would expect, or at least not be too surprised to see this as a bill in the House, or even pass there. But the fact that it passed the Senate…I’m ashamed of the U.S. Senate today.
