A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

I got a little laugh out of a news article about renewing the Voting Rights Act (which is a good thing, btw). Conservatives nutjobs, err, representatives tried to kill part of the law which says if a large portion of the population in an area speaks, say, Spanish, well (this one’s a really novel idea that blow your socks off), the ballot should also be in Spanish! Wow! What an idea.

Back to the nutjobs though, the WHCCNs (white heterosexual conservative Christian nutjobs) cried out “What unites our country? It’s language!” Basically saying allowing non-English speakers to be able to fairly participate in our democracy will shake the very foundations of our society or something as it will encourage non-English speakers to not bother learning English. hehehe. Are these people for real? Do they ever stop to listen to themselves speak? It’s so wacko nutjob hysterically funny. Except it’s sad. Cuz it’s real.

But the whole point of my post is, the WHCCNs claim English is what unites Americans, what is the foundation of our society. Without it unifying us all, we collapse into anarchy! (Insert hysterical screaming here). But, when it’s gay rights at issue, it’s  ‘traditional’ (whatever the hell that means in the context of the history of marriage) marriage that is what unites us, that is the foundation of our society, that without it (i.e. allowing probably 0.5-2% of adult couples that are gay or lesbian to marry somehow makes the other 98% ‘without it’) we collapse into anarchy.

So I’m just curious for the WHCCNs out there. Which is it? English or breeder marriages that unite us all and without which our society would collapse into chest beating caveman anarchy? (And no, there is no option C, all of the above). Cuz I’m confused. I am just a stupid WHAL (white homosexual atheist liberal) after all.
