A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

Well, I’m trying not to be too excited about this, but it’s hard not to. ;-) I received word back from a sci-fi magazine, Leading Edge, a couple of days ago. I submitted one of my stories, Winged Visage, to them a while back. Well, first off, they did decline it, so no, it’s not an acceptance yet. I wouldn’t be trying to not be excited then, you’d each be getting a call from me screaming hysterically!

But, what they did say is they were definitely interested in it and would liek to see it re-submitted after I’d done some work!! And what I really like is that this place always gives two critiques by editors on any work submitted. So, I have some specific items I have to work on, and then I’ll re-submit. And then, maybe, just maybe, I’ll get accepted.

So, now I face the daunting task of trying to edit it and do it right. The main things are the budding relationship between the two main characters and the hook. The intro is too slow, and the two main characters have a love relationship evolve that has a mirror in the main plot element. The mirror apparently works well, but what’s troublesome about the protagonists is that one doesn’t like the other at first, then the relationship does a roundabout due to plot developments. This transition is the main piece that’s rough right now. It’s not very believable. I’ll have to look at some other stories and see how they do transitions on character’s feelings for other characters.

Fantastic! But having submitted it, you’ve done two things: 1. Received unbiased criticism of your writing and 2. Incentive to improve that one and write more later!

Awesome. And what Chris said. We’ll be waiting on pins and needles for when it’s finally accepted.

Cool … you should be taking the Lit class I’m in. It’s the Literature of Science Fiction & Fantasy. It’s co-taught by the dean of the College of Arts & Humanities & Tony Daniels a sci fi writer. We have to write a paper for the class & one of the options is to write a Sci Fi short story, complete with a mini-workshop. It sounds like we’re also going to have some virtual visits via teleconference from some other authors. So far it’s a great class.

Very cool. I took a similar sci-fi literature class at Texas A&M and really enjoyed it. We read some great stories and discussed the various ethical themes each one addressed, and how they reflected the times they were written in.
