I got me a new phone! w00t! I’m now the happy owner of a Palm Treo 700p. I’ve been wanting PDA functions again for a while (I had a Handspring Treo years ago and loved it but hated carrying it and a phone around). The package from Amazon arrived this evening and I spent the rest of the evening setting it up, filling out and mailing my rebate forms, etc. The whole process to port your old # over is a bit tedious. The Verizon support staff are great, but it still takes a while. Yep, I left Sprint for Verizon. Hey, I’m a carrier whore. I’ll go with whoever’s got the best deal for me, doesn’t make no difference to me! Actually, it does a little. I do want a carrier who has a good network. Both have decent networks so neither had anything going for them, except for the new customer deal switching to Verizon.
It’s also got teh high-speed internets, but I’m going to try and refrain from using that a lot. I’ll probably start text messaging more (Vic, you can send me text messages now and I’ll read them!). I have a 10 MB/month plan, and I’m planning to bump that down to a pay as you go for data access and use it very sparingly. The unlimited plan is of course the way to go, but both it and the 10 MB plan are a tad expensive for me. Still, it’s handy to have the option. I’ll have to be careful going to sites not maximized for the phone. I visited IMDB.com for s&g and watched 200KB download on one page! Yikes!
The form factor is great. It has great sound quality, feels ok in my hand next to my ear and being used as a PDA. It has a QWERTY keypad for text messages and other data entry, but also a touchscreen, and a numeric keypad for the phone.
Your phone sounds cool. I’m still using my Sony-Ericsson T-637, which is getting a bit long in the tooth. Sadly there’s no money in the tech budget for new phones.
You may want to look at the TCPMP pocket media player:
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org
It is THE media player for Windows Mobile, but their website claims Palm combatibility as well. I can load up an SD card with mp3s or Xvid tv shows or ripped movies, while Video iPod suckers are buying $1.99 tv shows from iTunes.
And on the subject of expensive data plans…if you’ll humor me for a moment while I get on the soapbox. Counting bytes while you’re online is *so* 1985. I mean this is ridiculous. It’s The New Millenium. Where’s my frickin ubiquituous internet access that follows me wherever I am? And while I’m at it, where’s my flying car? So far, the future is a huge letdown.
October 11, 2006 @ 11:50 pmCool, I’ll have to check that out. Thanks for the tip. Tell me about it, I hate the idea of watching how much I download. Reminds me of having only 5 hours a month online of AOL. I can’t believe I only got online 5 hours a month back then!
