A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

Been quiet here. Perhaps my blog craze is fading. Maybe I’ve all I’ve had to say.

Work has been busy. My server upgrade went in. Stayed up all weekend, but it went smoothly. Rather boring effort all in all, but the first baby step in a long, major project (to more or less rewrite things). Coming to an ideological challenge in the team on what exactly the next version of the application will be. It’s a little frustrating, but it’s good in a way to be challenged, to not just sit on your laurels and have everything go your way. The more views you bring in, the more holes you spot in the solution and the more robust it will be long term. That’s really all I want when I get down to it: an app that is more streamlined, flexible, consistent, bug-free, and easier to keep bug free (test driven development anyone?) as well as easier to track down bugs. The challenge is do we stay with the niche, proprietary frameworks we use (which are good, sometimes better than the common standard solution, but no one coming in knows about them and has to ramp up, and we’re not even good about using them right) and try to use them better/more appropriately (which I have my doubts about if we’ll actually do), or go with standards that everyone uses and aren’t always perfect but do have more development community support and are less likely to have support dropped for them since more than one company and group support the standard.

I haven’t roleplayed in a while but I’ve been itching to. I’m tempted to just do a gaming world that is traditional high fantasy: elves, dwarves, dragons, etc. One plus from that is the wealth of D&D and other RPG system material that’s built on such generic worlds, it would just plug right in after conversion to GURPS. I love creating my own stuff but sometimes it’s nice to have things pre-built that fit in your world.Writing’s also been neglected, but I do have some ideas I may pursue soon.

The big brother program is going well, though I haven’t had a chance to do any outings recently. Hopefully the week after Christmas since I’m out of work and he’s out of school we should be able to catch up. I’m glad I’m in the program, it’s just different adjusting to having someone new that you fit into your life, like a friend or relative that just appeared suddenly.
