Just how tentative can you get? Obama is preparing to file (hasn’t filed yet) paperwork to create a committee (hasn’t created it yet) to explore a bid (hasn’t committed to a bid yet) for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination (hasn’t been nominated yet) to be elected president (hasn’t been elected yet). Sorry, just for some reason the statement (minus my comments in parens) struck me as humorous. It’s like saying I’m thinking about telling people that I might be considering evaluating an approach for talking to a realtor about possibly buying a house.
Seriously though, as great as this guy seems, I’m saddened to hear he’s doing this. He’s too young and inexperienced and won’t get elected. Cynical, but true. Just look at history. Is it possible? Sure. But not likely. And, sadly in this country there’s a tarnish on anyone who’s ran before. Generally if they don’t get the party ticket they can try again, though I think their chance at getting the party ticket is reduced each time they try. But if they get the ticket they can’t try again. Now I don’t know about each and every presidential election so these generalizations could be wrong, they’re just my opinion.
I really think he should wait and run in the next election. At the very most, he could be a vice-presidential candidate. But, the reality is I don’t think he could get elected to either top office in this country yet. Again, perhaps I’m cynical but we have yet to elect anything but middle-aged or older wealthy white Christian men. Hillary’s enough of a stretch as a woman. I think it’s possible (just barely) that a woman or non-white male could make it, as long as they had a Christian white male moderate running mate. (Don’t think that I want it this way…I’d love to see an African-American Jewish female in office, this is just the way I honestly see America voting). There’s one other factor going against him besides his race. I read it in a Newsweek article about him and Hillary recently (basically on the same topic of whether America is more ready to elect a non-Caucasian male or a Caucasian female to the top office), and I was pleasantly surprised the magazine didn’t make an issue of this. Still, I see it being an issue with, shall I say undereducated Americans who make assumptions based on name alone? See, Obama’s middle name might sound familiar. It’s Hussein. Am I just overly cynical and burned by America from the last 6 years? Will Americans actually not vote for him just because of his race or his middle name? We’ll just have to see. I’d love to be proven wrong!
