A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

As it’s named in its native language, or Pan’s Labyrinth as it’s being marketed over. Vic and I saw this last weekend. The advertising for it at first made me think it was just an interesting child’s fairy tale type movie. It did after all have a girl in front of an old spooky tree and labyrinth. And while the movie is a fairy tale, it’s most certainly one for adults. The movie is set in Spain in the 1940’s. It is both a real world war drama, and a fairy tale all in one. The two story lines parallel each other to some extent with nasty villains in each. The fantasy scenes were beautiful. The faun and other elements were very natural and organic, different from the clean, gilded “high fantasy” often shown.

If you’re a fan of fantasy, or of a good drama, I highly recommend the film. Be warned that there is some rather intense violence in it, but it’s used appropriately to depict certain characters.
