A Zen gay atheistic Texan’s perspective

I got a jury summons for today so I spent the morning at the Denton County courthouse. It was funny, they had this little video they ran at the start talking about the jury process with cute clips from movies and TV. Made it much less dull than I thought it would be. I got picked for the pool for a small case this afternoon. Probably won’t be nearly as interesting or lengthy as the three day murder trial I sat on the jury for years ago.

I’m a good 45 minutes to an hour from home or the office so when I got out at 10 and had to be back at 2, I didn’t really want to make the round trip drive (not to mention these days that’s about $5 in gas!). Luckily there’s a cute college town coffee shop on the town square called Jupiter House with free wi-fi. I had my work laptop so I grabbed a peach tea smoothie and worked for a bit (well, one of the dev servers was down so I did what I could). The shop sits across from the original court house. I love old courthouses with all the stone and elaborate roofs, cupolas, etc. Most architecture today is just plain dull!

I guess some mind doing jury duty. I don’t really. It’s not that often, and it’s truly one of the things to be proud of and thankful for in this country. I try to take it seriously because I figure if/when I need a jury (hopefully as a plaintiff and not as a defendant!) I want people there who will do their best to judge things honestly and fairly. Plus there’s that huge check for $6! (Surprisingly, after the first day it’s $40/day, which isn’t awful. It was $10/day for the last trial I sat on the jury for).

    Chris Says:

You’re a regular American hero! Did they say anything about the percent of turnout they have in Denton Co?

No. The percent of people summoned who show up? You’d hope that’s pretty high! ;-)
