Ian and I along with our friends (and most of my family!) have recently joined an organic produce co-operative. I had heard about this notion for a while. Instead of buying through the grocery store, a group of people get together for buying power. Sometimes they go to local farms. In this case, it seems they go to farmer’s markets somewhere nearby and probably have arrangements with various farmers for all organic produce. It’s not as local as I’d like, but I’m hoping that gets better in warmer months. The food has been good quality and I think is a decent deal considering it’s all organic. You get a mix of fruit and vegetables. It’s reasonably consistent with some interesting changes each cycle. We get half of a large RubberMaid tub full of produce every 2 weeks for $25. Ian has to drive a few minutes to pick it up (there seems to be a pickup in DFW every 10-15 miles across the Metroplex).
I’m happy one because we’re eating more organic food (I increasingly buy organic at the grocery store when I can). And secondly, with fresh fruit and greens sitting in the house, it’s so much easier to cook with them, eat them, etc. Before, we’d sometimes speed through the grocery store and not bother with too many fresh greens. With it already purchased and sitting in your fridge, you’re much more likely to feel obligated to eat them and thus have a healthier diet!
The co-op we’re with is YourHealthSource. Check them out!
