A Zen gay Texan’s perspective

Well I’m years late to the party (again) but I do finally have a nice setup for keeping my info up to date everywhere. Ian switched us over to Google Apps for Domains a while back for the Queerlydigital.com domain. I now use Google Documents, Mail, Calendar and Contacts instead of Outlook at home and also at work. GoSync syncs my Outlook and Google contacts (and when I sync my phone to Outlook it is also in the big happy sync circle). Google Calendar Sync syncs the Outlook and Google calendars for work and home (2 way at home, 1 way at work to Google).

I realize most of the digerati with the latest iPhones, etc. can directly sync/access this stuff already, but for me and my trusty Treo this works.  As soon as the Palm Pre comes out I’ll check out how well it does all this, as it supposedly is designed around this concept of pulling in calendars, contacts, etc. from multiple sources and blending them together without having to wait for a desktop sync.

I get text messages sent to my phone for work appointments, and the Google mobile interface for docs, mail, and calendar are fairly decent. Calendar at this point is only really good if you want to see the upcoming week (which is 90% of the time). They need a search field to allow you to quickly jump to another date/time. Docs is good for documents, the spreadsheet one column/one row at a time view leaves something to be desired.

For backup I’m syncing my pictures to Flickr with Flickr sync (this means I have to pay the $25/year or whatever it is, but that’s fairly cheap once you’ve almost lost all your photographic memories!). Plus, it means easy access to my pictures anywhere (anywhere there’s an internet connection, which is anywhere these days :-) ). We backup the pictures and music from the server to an external hard drive via a simple rsync cron, which also notifies us when new music is loaded so we can pull it into iTunes or Amarok.
