Calm after the Storm
Herky jerky frentic and fast
Furious fire burning within
What drives such a mad race
With no known end?
Like a dawn of a new day
After a stormy night
With fantastic displays
Of light and sound
Harsh cruel reality slips in
Through the gates
Its narrow, slitted eyes
Dig into every crack,
Snap every beam
And the deck of cards
That was our palace
Comes crashing to the ground
Only to have every man and child
Running about
Shoving ruins back together as if
They could rebuild a reality
That never existed
Sad and hollow
The wind on the plains
Passes right into
Our minds and souls
Calm and mechanical
We move through the paces
As if tending to a grave
Like it were a sick patient
Only waiting for it to get better
The sun sets
On this harshest of days
And we gather together
Over the last glowing embers of fire
In hope of a better tomorrow.
