Not much has been happening on this I know.
I’ve been busy with developing a GURPS fantasy adventure that was played last weekend (lots of fun!). I actually pulled the concept in a recent post, the Festival of the Amber Moon, from the adventure.
Hopefully I can find some more time to work on this world. It has some potential, but I want to make sure I keep the world interesting and original, while still relevant. It needs to grab the interest of someone who is a fan of the sci-fi/fantasy genre with new concepts, yet stay similar enough to existing memes and motifs as to not be so foreign that it alienates this same group.
At the same time, I need to have archetypes which present themselves ripe with the seeds of adventures. I noticed this from a recent article someone sent me regarding Underworld. The tragic antihero I believe they called him (Viktor in Underworld in this case). A hero who has an honorable cause but uses dishonorable means to attain it, thus becoming a villain who you must reluctantly hate/kill/etc. The hero in this case must investigate and uncover the antihero’s dark secret, usually being exiled in some fashion. I’d reference the article but I don’t have the link any more. Anyway, I need characters, myths, and other such stuff that represents these archetypes.
Probably a good approach is to find or come up with a list of classical archetypes then create interesting myths of old kings and sorcerors that flesh these out. Then, future adventures and stories can use elements of these as either background or the main story.
Archetypes I can think of so far:
* Tragic antihero - Hero with noble goals use bad means to achieve them and hides this and becomes villian. Another hero is exiled when begins to think something bad has happened of this great person, but eventually uncovers the truth and regains their status.
