The sadness of eternal life

Whew! Haven’t added anything to this blog in a while. Haven’t done any writing at all in some time. Hopefully I can start getting back to it.

Thought of an interesting scenario that could be part of a larger storyline. There is a race of eternals (I like that word better than the overused immortals, but same idea). Many of them are very slow to speech and seem very sad and distant most of the time. Few of them will ever discuss this. It is known they were once a great and powerful race but now are very withdrawn and seen less often.

One of them is a character in a story with a younger, more brash character. Only when the eternal is afflicted with something that drops him into a coma and saps his life will the younger character realize the weight eternals carry with them. With the help of a witch, he links into the eternal’s mind, trying to get a hold of his life essence and convince him to fight for life and come back to consciousness. The mortal keeps getting dragged into the eternal’s memories, each time finding it harder to break free. More and more he feels what the eternal felt during the memory and thinks he IS the eternal.

In more and more of the memories, the mortal finds out how many tragedies, deaths, and other follies of mortals the eternal has been witness to. Sometimes, these are due to advice from the eternal. With his vast experience, he sometimes felt he could help a goodly king make peace or other similar scenarios, but interfering doesn’t always lead to good endings. Over time, the eternals decided to meddle far less in mortal affairs, but still they carry with them the sadness of witnessing hundreds, if not thousands of deaths of loved and cherished ones, innocents. The end of great kingdoms, the folly of the young, etc.

The mortal has to convince the eternal of the wonders of life, and those he has changed for the better. For good or bad, the eternals are alive and must live that life to the fullest, no matter how long it goes on. He convinces the eternal to awaken, but he comes out of it greatly matured and with an understanding and respect of the burden of such a long life.
