I’ll put any new ideas from my other, basically defunct blog about a fantasy world here. Basically, it’s a world that has been literally broken into pieces. Instead of a spherical globe, ‘chunks’ of land float in the sky, islands separated by air, not water basically.
Millenia ago, the main race(s) wielded powerful magics to their own destruction and tore the land asunder, creating these isolated worlds (each being referred to as a ’skyland’, a play on island…too cheesy?). Now, each people on each world are never in contact with the others. However, an ancient race referred to as the protectors watches over each skyland and is able to travel between them.
The protectors are quiet creatures, rigid in the formality of their traditions. They have lives that stretch over millenia and believe in keeping the status quo. When the earth-sundering event occurred, they decided the main race did not have the responsibility to wield such power, so they divided them up and isolated them. It takes two people to wield magic. One summons the energy via song, dance, and other means from nature, animals, and the elements. The other has a mind that can memorize and craft spells to take the energy and bend it to their will. Summoners and enchanters. On each skyland, there are a people who have either one blood or the other, but never both.
The protectors seem like tall statues. They are many tones, ivory, emerald, but each one is a single color from head to toe, even their clothes. They have no hair, and their bodies are the texture of stone. Secretly they traverse passages between the skylands that go through a dark netherworld. Each skyland has old, forgotten portals that reach into this labrythine world filled with ghoulish creatures. It is forbidden for the natives to enter the ruins of the old cities where the portals reside.
Our heroine and hero (yes, one each of Summoner and Enchanter) will find reason, by accident or desparation, to enter the tunnels of the Nightlands. Together they will uncover the secrets of the past. They will realize that the protectors are not protectors of their peoples, but rather controllers. The protector stands for protector of the world.
The story will be about breaking free of control and showing those who decided they could interfere in a race’s future that no group, no matter how knowledgeable or powerful, has the right to decide another group’s fate like that. The characters will encounter isolationist fears and overcome them, along with others learning that different types of people and customs are ok. They will bring back the old magics to the land and begin a new era teaching magic.
However, they don’t realize that as they have pushed the protectors out, that the protectors made the same mistake as their ancestors: messing with powers they didn’t quite understand. In opening the gates to the Nightlands, they have barely been able to keep the demonic denizens from entering into the skylands. With the natives essentially overthrowing the Protectors, some of the Nightfolk have slipped into the Dayworld, the land of the skylands….
