Yes, yes another world idea. It’s a high fantasy world: magical creatures, multiple sentient races, wizards who can shoot fireballs, etc.
Here’s the big twist though: a high-tech species from another world arrives. They’ve been studying the magical races and want to utilize that power in the galactic scheme of things. War ensues.
The stories would be set several years after this first encounter. The grueling war is crawling along. The culture on the fantasy world has changed dramatically. The native races have had to fast forward their technological prowess. They deal with galactic traders willing to risk the enemy. So, you have wizards with laser-sighted guns, warriors carrying swords and listening to electronic music players, etc. A fairly dark, punk world of magic, fantasy, and sci-fi. From what I understand, yes, it is similar to Shadowrun, but I think it would be substantially different.
The native species would be faced with a conundrum much like many natives who are conquered (the Native Americans for instance). They’re fighting for their way of life, their heritage, but it is very quickly eroding. And once it is gone, it is gone forever. The Native Americans of today try to respect their heritage of dances, songs, foods, etc. but the people themselves simply aren’t the “Indians” of a century ago. The same situation would apply here. Even if they can repel the offworlders, their world will never be the same.
Also, one of my recurring themes, would be stereotypes. I’d have people from both sides be in a group somehow. There would be prejudices and hatred that would be overcome as they got to know each other. The magic users aren’t primitive freaks, and the technologists aren’t cold-blooded usurpers, etc.
